Join Brian Allen and Darrell Lawson on a birding adventure! Beaver Island is an underbirded area with great potential for fall migrants and perhaps even a western rarity or two. September is also an excellent time for pelagic birds on the Great Lakes. This adventure combines the two! It provides ample opportunities to view pelagic birds on Lake Michigan and fall migrants on the island. An itinerary of events is as follows:
Saturday Morning: The Emerald Isle ferry leaves Charlevoix at 11:30 AM. The nonstop trip will take approximately two and a half hours, providing a great opportunity for viewing pelagic birds.
Saturday Afternoon/Evening: Participants are free to do as they choose. Some options include:
Taking the Beaver Island Tour to learn about the Island's history and culture. Package deal can be purchased with the ferry tickets.
Take an aerial tour of the outer islands in the Beaver Island Archipelago. The aerial tour is $40.00 per person for 1/2 hour flight.
Bird on your own at the many hot spots along the Beaver Island Birding Trail (maps available at the Community Center).
Explore the Island's rich culture, history, and natural history, on your own.
Simply relax and enjoy the town of St. James!
Early Sunday Morning: Climb in vans to visit several potential migrant hot spots. This field trip is guided by Brian and Darrell.
Late Sunday Morning: Take the ferry back to Charlevoix at 11:20 AM and enjoy a second opportunity for pelagic birding on the way.
Note: There is no charge for this experience other than your own cost for travel, the ferry, lodging, food, and any activities you choose to participate in on your own time.
